About the Hall of Fame
Nominations for the Hall of Fame Class are accepted all year. Candidates must have a minimum of 4 years experience in the SSFL and have to be nominated by a third party to be included in the selection process. An entire list of all nominees are publiced on this site and comments on nominees are welcome.
Nominations to the Hall of Fame are accepted in the following categories: player, coach, owner, staff, executive, officials association, and combination-where the candidate has served in more han one capacity.

Hall of Fame Class of 2011
Leonard Opheim

Leonard Opheim, Head Coach of the Orlando Rage was elevated to this position from the staff where he served as
Defensive Coordinator. He replaced SSFL Hall of Fame Coach, Steve Casteel and the transition was seamless as
the team won back to back SSFL Championships in 2008 and 2009. Participating in National Bowl Weekend,
sponsored by National Football Events, Inc., his team was honored as National Champions. The ability to manage
one of the most talented staffs in the country, Leonard exemplifies the ideals expected in an SSFL Head Coach.
Mike Shannon

As a Player/Owner, Mike Shannon was an original SSFL member with his team the Space Coast Panthers and
the Orlando Panthers. His administrative integrity and honesty help set the foundatinas of the high standards of
the SSFL. On the field, in his position at fullback, Mike was a force to be contended with for oposing defenses.
States Commissioner Rice, "The SSFL has not seen the likes of Mike Shannon at the fullback position since his
retirement. Power, determination and toughness are adjectives that come to mind when I think of Mike. Mike
was an obvious SSFL All Star, but as an owner, refused to nominate himself - another example of his character".
Jim Nugent

Jim Nugent made a life time career playing, coaching, administering and promoting special events in Minor
League Football. He has brought teams and leagues to national recognition through his many endevors. The
SSFL is one of the leagues that has benefited nationally from association with Jim. The SSFL and its member
teams owe Jim a debt of gratitude and welcome him as our National Inducteee as a member of the SSFL Hall of
Fame.
Robert Spoonhour

Robert Spoonhour, offensive lineman, played for the Orlando Rage from 2006 - 2009 until his career was
ended with an injury just before the end of the 2009 season. His career included participation in the YMCA
Bowl, National Championship victory over the Georgia Xtreme and two SSFL Championship seasons.
Selected as an All American in 2007 and 2008, Robert was the first SSFL player to be named National Player of the
Year in his chosen position.
Ron Scarlata

Ron Scarlata, Offensive Coordinator for the Orlando Rage, achieved the highest honor as a Coordinator with the
team winning two consecutive SSFL Championships in 2008 and 2009. His team holds the SSFL record for the
most points scored in an SSFL Championship Game held in the Florida Citrus Bowl. Recognized by his players as
a coach that goes the extra mile in helping players achieve their goals, Ron has assisted many players in
advancing to the next level. An innovative play caller, Ron is known for his high scoring offenses and the ability to
adjust the offense to opponents defenses. Head Coach Len Opheim stated, "As a head coach I am very pleased to
have some of the best coaches in football. Ron Scarlata is one such coach".

John Bartolo

John Bartolo is a Charter Member of the SSFL since its establishment in 2000 as the owner and offensive center for the Broward County Chargers. From 2001 -2006 John was the owner and Special Teams Coordinator for the Florida Titans, a consistent contender for the Champoinship. Serving the SSFL in many capacities, John was the leagues webmaster from 1999-2005. Commissioner Rice credits John with formulating many of the organizational procedures still existent in the SSFL and he is known as one of the foundation blocks within the league. The Titans were selected as the 2003 Commissiners Cup Award Winning Organization. John served as the host and game coordinator for the 2003 SSFL All Star Game played in the Miami Orange Bowl Stadium. An ever loyal league team member, it was John who first coined the title of the SSFL Championship Game as the Rice Bowl, a moniker that still exists.
John's experiences are best described by him personally. Stated John, " I was lucky enough to be a member of a group of team
owners who stood up and created the Southern States Football League with David Rice, Commissioner. Under Commissioner Rice’s guidance and the leadership of the individual team owners, I felt proud to be a member of such a league for several years. Knowing that we had something to do in making the SSFL the premier league in the south created the feeling of a remarkable sense of achievement. As our players would develop, come and go, as our seasons began, played out and finished, I always felt the feeling of enduring pride and achievement since the SSFL was constantly evolving, refining and becoming a more professional league each year. I feel blessed to have been a part of such an accomplishment from a league perspective and honored to have been able to work with so many talented players, coaches, officials, team owners and most of all, the families and the fans. It was truly an amazing part of my life which I will never be able to duplicate".
Robert Morgan

Robert Morgan has been a consistent Southern States Football League All Star as a Defensive Lineman in 2004,05,06,07and ,09. Prior to the SSFL Rage he was and SSFL Orlanod Star from 2000-2002. Recognized
Nationally he was selected to Team USA in 2002. A Member of the Orlando Rage SSFL Championship Teams in
2008 and 2009 his leadership on the field was as important as his playing ability. Winning the National Football
Events Inc. National Championship in 2008 the team continues to crest. A four year letterman at Flagler Palm
Coast HS in Bunnell Fl, he played college ball in 1992-93 at Cumberland University in Williamsburg, Kentucky and
in 1994-95 at Valdosta State University, Valdosta, GA.
Rob Diebold

Rob Diebold, player and coach in the SSFL set many "firsts" in SSFL History. Entering the SSFL in 2001 with the St. Pete Sharks, coached by SSFL HOF member, Ernest Givens after playing with the Tampa Bay Cougars/Bulldogs in
the United Football Legue where he was selected as an All Star in the 1999 & 2000 seasons. Rob was the offensive captain and played center. The Sharks season concluded with them winning their first of 4 consectuve SSFL Championships. The first of his "firsts" was to be the first SSFL player to play internationally in Finland. The next season he played with the Tamake Lightninbg in Aukland, New Zealand where he doubled as a player/coach. His coaching success led to hs appointment as a coach of the New Zealand National Team who traveled to play in California and Washington as part of their national tour. Upon returning to the U.S., Rob coached with the SSFL's
Cape Coral Fear. Robs 2nd "first" was to be the first SSFL player to be inducted in the Minor League Football Hall
of Fame in 2004. Since then he has been the Southeast Region Director of the Minor Leaue Football Hall of Fame tasked with the responsibility of identifying individuals worthy of induction. The SSFL is proud of Rob and he
expresses his feelings about his SSFL experience this way, "The SSFL in my eyes, was the best run, best organized league in the state of Florida, and one of the best in the country (having first hand knowledge of how things
operate elsewhere). It is truly Minor League footbll at its finest. I'm proud to have been a part of it". For the
2010-2011 season Rob has signed on as the line coach for the Wilcats of the Gridiron Queensland League located in Brisbane, Australia. The teams Head Coach is MLFN Hall of Fame member, Adam Campbell. Coach Campbell
brought Rob from a coaching assignment in Finland to be a player/coach for the Lighting team in New Zealand in
2001.
Rod Harris

Rod Harris, formerly of the now defunct, Duval Lions and First Coast Generals of Jacksonville, was an SSFL 6 time All Star. He is the Generals all time leader in interceptions and the teams 2 time defensive player of the year. As a player with the Duval Lions, Rod received the teams MVP award and was the Lions all time intercepltion leader. His SSFL accomplishments provided Rod with invitations to several NFL camps and signed a professional contract with the Hamilton Tigercats of Canadian Football League (CFL). In arena football, he played with the Jacksonville Tomcats for 2 seasons and made the All Arena team and held intercelptins records - most in a game (3) and most in a season (13). Known in the SSFL for his tenacious play and on field leadership, Rod exemplifies outstanding football character.
Jeremiah Blake

Wide Reciever, Jeremiah Blake played on three (3) SSFL teams in his long career in Minor League Football.
# 82 played with the St. Petersburg Sharks, Central Florida Commandos and the Hernando Eagles garnishing three
( 3 ) SSFL Championships. Jeremiah was honored as an SSFL All Star in 2002,3,4,5,6 and 7. He was also selected
to play on the Team USA squad as a result of his outstanding accomplishments. Under the coaching expertise of
former NFL great, Ernest Givins, Blake scored 21 TD's and gained 1237 yards in an SSFL Championship season with the the St. Pete Sharks.f His success has achieved 4 championship rings and 8 championship appearances in his career in Minor League Football.
Terrence Skinner

At the time of selection, Terrence had just completed his 11th season as a minor league official. As the referee for the SSFL's 10th Annual Rice Bowl, held in the Florida Citrus Bowl, his championship level leadership included 9 playoff games, 5 Divisional Championship games, 2 Divisional playoffs and one wild card game. Terrence earned the assignments through the league's evaluation system in which the highest rated officials at each position based on their geographical location with the required experience, are chosen to work the games. Rice Bowl Championship consideration must include a minimum of 5 years of league experience and previous playoff assignments. Commissioner Rice stated, "Terrence Skinner is an exceptional referee who commands respect from players, coaches and staff. The professionalism exhibited at SSFL games is in direct proportion to the quality of the Referee and his crew. Terrence exhibits that professionalism on and off the field".
Derek Mintzner
Derek Mintzer is one of several outstanding kickers produced in the SSFL. His SSFL accomplishments propelled his career into the professional ranks. In the SSFL in 2001 his 53 yard field goal was the best in the league that year and in 2006 his 48 yarder bested all kicks that season. His 5 for 5 PAT's is an SSFL single game record. Professionally, Derek achieved success in AF2 with tthe Mobile, Alabama Wizards and Gulf Coast Riders and the Florida Stingrays of the AIFA. He holds the record for the most points scored in a single game with 17 and the most field goals in a single game with 4.
John Porter

John Porter, selected in for the HOF Class in the category of Player is a 7 time SSFL All Star. He began his SSFL career with the Orlando Panthers and appears to have ended his SSFL career with the Orlando Rage, as he is anticipated to be playing professionaly in an indoor league for 2010. At 350 pounds and quick feet, it is no wonder John has received so many honors....led the Rage to back to back Rice Bowl Championships in 2009 and 2009, 1st team All American Honors in 2007 and 2008. Recognized for his accomplishments in the SSFL, John played for Team USA and in Arena Ball in the NIFL. Plying his collegiate football at Northwest Mississippi JC, he was a 2 time first team All State Player , 3 time All Metro and 2 time Defensive MVP while in HighSchool at Edgewater HS. Commented Commissioner Rice, "Anchoring the defensive line, one cannot underestimate his contibutions to the success of the Rage over the years. He played and acted as a true professional and exhibits the love of the game expected in SSFL players".
Mitch Fazzio

Mitch Fazzio was an official in the SSFL for 6 seasons, beginning in 2004. Honored as an outstanding league
official he served as the Back Judge in the 2006 SSFL Rice Bowl Championship Game held in the Florida Citrus
Bowl. Mitch was nominated for the HOF by two SSFL Hall of Fame Officials, a testimony to his qualifications being
recognized by one of your own. Previously, he had been a high school official since 1976 and worked in Louisiana,
Texas and Florida, where he was selected to officiate the FHSAA 4A State Championship Game in 2003. Other
awards included the Under Armor All American HS games in 2009 and 2010. Currently a member of the Central
Florida Officials Association, he is a Board Member and works with the eductation committee in developing and
training new and veteran officials.
Keith Baxter

Keith Baxter has been selected into the SSFL Hall of Fame Class of 2010 in the Catergory as an Official. Keith is a member of the SSFL Officials Association and has been officiating Minor League Football for 15 years. His career as an official spans 23 years including the Gulf Coast South Conference and theSun Belt Conference. In addition to officiating, Keith has been the Defensive Coordinator of a H.S. team for 11 years. An outstanding official with a background as a coach, Keith represents professionalism in his game management.
Frank & Bob Carroll
MitSSFL's First Father & Son HOF Inductees
Bob Carroll

Frank Carroll
Frank (Butch) and Bob Carroll made significant contributions to the Venice Viking organization under head coach
and SSFL Hall of Fame, Class of 2007 member, Skip Poole. Frank had joined the team as a team trainer and
medical liaison in 2002 and later became the Special Teams assistant coach. He instituted a system of competition, and taught unit discipline while making the special teams a place players performed with pride.
Bob joined the Vikings initially as a defensive assistant coach and was recognized by Coach Poole for his
oganizational and motivatinal skills. As such, he was promoted to Special Team Coordinator and along with Frank, produced one of the finest special team units in SSFL history. Speaking for the coaching tandem, Frank states, "We loved the time spent with the Vikings and lerning more about the game under Coach Poole. Had the team been
able to continue, we would still be coching in Venice. We will always hold the years in the SSFL ss the best times in or lives.
Shane Sanderson

Shane has played on SSFL teams which include the Duval Lions, Jacksonville Wolfpack nd the North Florida Rams.
His SSFL career included included being a 5 time SSFL All Star as a defensive lineman. His 14 blocked kicks in
2003 as a Duval Lion was an SSFL record and that year he registered a career high 22.5 sacks.. In 2001 & 02 he
was the Lions Defensive Lineman of the Year and in 2003 he was the Lions Defensive MVP of the Year. As a Jacksonville Wolfpack, he was the defensive leader and Captain of the squad, In addition to the SSFL, Shane
played in 3 other Minor Leagues and overall was selected s a league All Star in 10 of his 11 seasons of play.
Married to wife, Chrisandra with 4 children Shane continues to share his passion for the game as a Head Coach
for the Sweetwater Athletic Association.
Jeremiah "Snoop" Chatman

Jeremiah "Snoop" Chatman has been an Orlando Rage player since 2003. He scored the first touchdown in Rage history. A four year letterman at Ely High School in Pompano Beach during the years 1994-1998, he excelled on
and off the field. As a Rage wide receiver he led the team in receptions and receiving yards in 2006,2009 and 2010.
His production earned SSFL All Star recognition in 2006 and 2010 and was voted Captain of the receiver core.
Snoop played a major role in the Rage's Back to Back SSFL Championship seasons in 2008 and 2009. Snoop states, "Since joining the SSFL, the Class and Organization of the owners and teams displayed, was a professsional atmosphere for me to grow and be a part of something special".

Steve Casteel - Head Coach, Orlando Rage
Head Coach of the Orlando Rage for 4 years, Steve Casteel retired following the 2007 season and turned the reins over to his assistant, Leoard Opheim. Coach Casteel is creditied with the development of the Rage into one of the SSFL's most disciplined and organized franchizes. During his tenure the Rage garnered 3 championships and amassed an overll recod of 44 wins and 9 losses. A winning record of 83 percent.

Jennie Buehrer – An SSFL Staff member, Jennie is our first female of many to come for induction. A Nebraska cornhusker, her knowledge of football and the discipline it requires has been a particular asset in the operation of the SSFL. As a Rice Bowl executive, her administrative skills is what makes the SSFL Championship Game the Poster Game for all of Minor League Football.
